International Experts to speak at Intensive Care Conference run by TUH

Critical Care Conference(March 1st 2023) World-leading experts from some of the most respected hospitals in the US, the UK and Germany are to address a special Critical Care Rehabilitation Conference organised by Tallaght University Hospital (TUH). The event will take place on Friday April 21st 2023, on the grounds of the Hospital.

This is the first time a multi disciplinary team focus rehabilitation conference has ever taken place in TUH and will include a special presentation from Critical Care Survivors. The impressive line-up of speakers will also include:

Professor of Critical Care Medicine Dale M. Needham, from Johns Hopkins University in the US. Prof Needham is also the Medical Director of the Critical Care Centre at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he treats ICU patients and runs the Rehabilitation Programme. His research interests include sedation, delirium, early physical rehabilitation and how to improve long-term physical and mental health outcomes for ICU patients.

Professor of Medicine Wesley Ely is the Co-Director of the Centre for Critical Illness, Brain Dysfunction, and Survivorship at the Vanderbilt Institute for Medicine & Public Health. His research has focused on improving care and outcomes for critically ill patients with ICU-acquired brain disease (which can manifest as delirium and chronically as acquired dementia). His team is responsible for developing the primary tool used to measure delirium in ICU-based trials.

Dr. Zudin Puthucheary is a Senior Lecturer in Intensive Care Medicine at the University of London and an ICU Consultant at the Royal London Hospital. His interests include muscle wasting, critical care nutrition and functional outcome research. His work on acute muscle wastage has won awards from the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine and the European Society of Anaesthesia. He was named a Global Rising Star by the Intensive Care Society of Australia and New Zealand.

Dr. Peter Nydahl is a Critical Care Nurse from the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein which is located in Kiel, Germany. He also founded the German Network for Early Mobilisation as well as the ICU Diary Network which aims to coordinate information, and projects and to connect people who may need further help. Dr Nydahl is interested in early rehabilitation for patients in the ICU, therapy of delirium, early mobilisation, and family integration.

Speaking ahead of the conference, The Peri-Operative Clinical Director at TUH Ms. Bridget Egan said, “We believe a gathering of this type is crucial to the successful development of Ireland’s critical care infrastructure, providing an ideal opportunity for clinicians and academic researchers to learn, exchange and collaborate with the world’s leading experts in this field.”

In Ireland, Tallaght University Hospital has led the way in terms of psychological support for patients in Intensive Care, in that it was the first hospital in the country to appoint a full-time permanent Clinical Psychologist to its ICU team. That person is Dr. Melanie Ryberg the Principal Specialist Clinical Psychologist in Critical Care. She says “Bringing together so many respected authorities to share ideas will certainly benefit patients as we strive to develop better treatments and an even deeper understanding of the medical challenges faced by those requiring critical care. Ultimately this conference will help us to give ICU patients even better care, not just during their hospital stay but afterwards when the long-term consequences of common complications like delirium can begin to manifest.”
